They demanded that the river-water be saved from poisoning and the free flow of fresh water inside the Sundarbans be ensured
Two green activists’ group under the banner of The National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans (NCSS) made a nine-points demand on Friday and urged the government to abort the Rampal Thermal Power Plant project which is hampering the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world.
They demanded that the river-water be saved from poisoning and the free flow of fresh water inside the Sundarbans be ensured.
To commemorate the day and uphold their demands activists of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Green Voice and NCSS jointly formed a human chain in front of the National Museum at Dhaka’s Shahbagh area.
During the event, Member Secretary of NCSS, Dr Md Abdul Matin said, Sundarbans Day has been observed on February 14 since 2002 with various programs across the country.
Dr. Md Mozahedul Islam Mujahid, Executive Chief of the Center for Human Rights Movement said: “Sundarbans is the heart of the country and we need to protect it. We are here today to save this forest and its bio-diversity. We are suffering because it is being destroyed by mankind.” He also said: “In the ongoing Mujib Year, we will adopt programs based on the guidance of the Father of the Nation.”
Furthermore, we will strengthen the ongoing movement and raise awareness among people about the importance of protecting the Sundarbans as well as other forests, he added.
BAPA General Secretary Sharif Jamil said: “Sundarbans is like our mother because it is continuously saving us from various natural disasters.”
Abdul Shamim Sernibat, Secretary Generaal of the Center for Human Rights Movement said: “Sundarbans is the heart of the country and we need to protect it. We are here today to save this forest and its bio-diversity. We are suffering because it is being destroyed by mankind.”
They put forward a nine-point demand including ensuring freshwater flow inside Sundarbans, halting the Rampal power plant project, stopping and removing all government and non-government projects near Sundarbans among others.
